By Adam Nagourney
Could Bob Kerrey — the former Nebraska senator, governor, one-time presidential candidate, almost New York City mayoral candidate and current president of the New School — be thinking about getting back into politics?Mr. Kerrey has made it known that he might be interested in running for the Senate seat in Nebraska should Chuck Hagel, a Republican, not seek re-election — and Democratic leaders have made it clear that they would like Mr. Kerrey to run. Mr. Kerrey, in an interview yesterday, said it was unlikely but not impossible.
“At the moment,” he said, “I don’t think I’m going to run. But these moments don’t happen very often. It’s a possibility.”
Unless Mr. Hagel seeks another term. “If Hagel runs, not only would I not run, I would write him a check,” Mr. Kerrey said.

New Jersey Democrats have donated more than $47,500 to nonprofits to try to remove the stigma of taking donations from a convicted felon whose fugitive status created a national scandal last fall, according to new reports released yesterday by the Election Law Enforcement Commission.
The Democratic State Committee sent checks to 11 nonprofit groups after receiving four contributions from New York businessman Norman Hsu between October 2005 and June 2007.

Assemblyman Joseph Cryan (D-Union), chairman of the Democratic State Committee, said once the party learned about Hsu's misdeeds, it knew it needed to take steps to regain the public's trust. Hsu's donations "had to be taken out of the state party coffers," he said.
Among the unexpected beneficiaries of the Hsu scandal were the Maureen Fund in Hackensack; Elijah's Promise in New Brunswick; New Jersey Community Development Foundation in Paterson, and Love Hope Strength Foundation in Denver, Colo. All received $5,000 checks from the state party.
The campaign finance reports also showed the so-called "big six" political fund-raising committees in New Jersey spent more than $23 million in last year's legislative races.
The three Democratic committees -- the Democratic State Committee and two legislative leadership PACs -- outspent their three Republican counterparts nearly 2 to 1 ($16 million to $7 million). The result: Democrats boosted their majority by one seat in the Senate to 23-17 but lost two seats in the Assembly, where they still have a formidable 48-32 advantage.
Individual candidates reported last month they spent a record $69 million on last year's election, with a big chunk of that coming from the big six. Three committees ended up in the red (the Democratic Assembly Campaign Committee, $715,248 in debt, New Jersey Democratic State Committee, $104,696, and Republican State Committee, $54,362) and will have to replenish their coffers.
The Senate Democratic Majority spent the most money of any of the six committees, $5.8 million, but still ended up with the biggest post-election reserve -- $176,370.
