HARRISON TWP. Since the county and state unveiled plans for the proposed U.S. Route 322 bypass, the project has been met with mixed reviews by the public.
The Gloucester County Freeholders and several local officials have promoted the project as the best way to alleviate the traffic congestion in Harrison Township. Others, including the Advocates for Responsible Traffic Solutions citizens group, have opposed the plan, claiming the new roadway would negatively impact the environment and quality of life. Upcoming presentations by both the county and Harrison Township Planning Board may provide a greater clarity as to how the proposed bypass could work.

For example, Barlage has concerns about environmental impact of wetlands that the bypass would have to traverse. And he has concerns abut the Holy Name of Jesus Church’s cemetery, which is adjacent to the proposed bypass. County officials have argued that the new roadway would not disturb the cemetery. Barlage and other members of the citizens group point to several Route 322 Corridor studies, which suggest a regional bypass and non-invasive improvements to existing infrastructure.

Damminger said he understands the residents concerns but stressed that the problem exists in Harrison Township, and therefore, must be addressed in Harrison Township.
“Nobody wants anything in their backyard but sometimes things have to be done for the greater good*,” he said.
*And remember, in Marxism, everyone works for the greater good for everyone else.
