Ex-Hostage Says Chinese Firm Provided Logistical Support to FARC

China National Petroleum Corporation helicopters visited camps set up by Colombia’s FARC rebels on seven occasions to provide them with logistical and medical support, a former hostage who escaped from the guerrillas last October told Efe Wednesday in an interview.

Those helicopters belonging to the Chinese state-owned energy firm would transport “doctors, medicine, provisions and even guerrillas,” as well as peasants and mayors in that region, Lizcano said.

Those seven flights occurred beginning in 2006, “paradoxically, when the area was under military siege and President (Alvaro) Uribe’s democratic security (policy) was in full force,” he said in allusion to the government’s efforts to battle illegal armed groups and the drug trade.

“I don’t understand why the country hasn’t reacted ... I investigated not only the (demobilized rebels) who received (assistance) from that Chinese multinational but also those who were transported in those helicopters,” he said, adding that the irony is that the doctors on board the choppers never treated him despite his serious health problems.
